Shule

from Laurels by Sophie Janna

/
  • Album with handwritten and hand-stamped sleeve
Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Since the first edition of this album has almost sold out, I made a new set. The old sleeve was no longer available and I changed my last name since the previous version, so this is a revised edition. The front is hand-stamped with a lino-cut made by Anneke ter Schure, everything else is handwritten onto the sleeve by me. That means that on these sleeves you can actually read the title of each song! :)

Includes unlimited streaming of Laurels via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

about

This is a traditional song and traditional melody often going by the name Siuil A Ruin (with an Irish instead of half-English chorus). This particular arrangement is my own. I changed the lyrics and melody slightly. If you play my version, it would be lovely if you would give me credit for the arrangement :) I learned the song from Sinead (don't remember her last name...) at the Irish session in Mulligans, Amsterdam.

lyrics

I wish I were on yonder hill
It's there I'll sit and cry my fill
And every tear would turn a mill
Johnny's gone for a soldier

Shule, shule, shule aroon
Shule, shule, he loves me
And when he returns he will marry me
Johnny has gone for a soldier

Well Johnny my love he went away
He would not heed what I did say
And he won't be back for many's a day
Johnny has gone for a soldier

Shule, shule, shule aroon
Shula, shula, he loves me
And when he returns he will marry me
Johnny has gone for a soldier

Well I'll sell my rack I'll sell my reel
I'll sell my only spinning wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel
Johnny has gone for a soldier

Shule, shule, shule aroon
Shula, shula, he loves me
And when he returns he will marry me
Johnny has gone for a soldier

I'll dye my skirt I'll dye it red
Around the world I'll bake my bread
Until I find him alive or dead
Johnny has gone for a soldier

Shule, shule, shule aroon
Shula, shula, he loves me
And when he returns he will marry me
Johnny has gone for a soldier
