Nightfall

from Wide World EP by Sophie Janna

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

The artwork for this album was made by me! It's a linocut inspired by the snow in March 2021, and a couple of swans I saw near my house around that time. Designer Joost Abbel turned the artwork into this design; he chose not to put any text on the front, and reversed the image for the inside of the case. There is no booklet with this album, but I did do my best on the packaging! I send them out in cardboard envelopes (and often reused ones), I avoid using plastic where I can.

about

Janna wrote Nightfall when she was staying in Austin rehearsing for a tour. The song is about the vulnerability you feel when you go on tour together: you may hardly know each other, but suddenly you’re stuck in the car together for hours, you sleep in the same room, you’re exposed to each other’s uncertainties, worries and nerves, night after night on a different stage with hopefully enough people to pay for your gas for the next concert. "I think with this song I was trying to tell my tour partner that he was safe with me; or perhaps I was trying to tell myself that I'd be safe with him."

lyrics

I remember the first time you came to my door
And I told you all my heart was pouring out
I was worrying about the guy that I lived with at the time
And you laughed so loud you chased my fears away
That was thirty months ago in a place I left below
When I followed you all this way

I’ll be home before nightfall and I’ll sleep in your bed
And I dream of all the things we'll never have
I will take my lead from you I will jump in if you do
And I realize how fortunate I am
That I get to call you my friend

And we hear the freight train in the morning
When lightning is coloring the sky
And the cedars in the yard are a million miles apart
And the rain falls but everything stays dry

I’ll be home before nightfall and I’ll sleep in your bed
And I dream of all the things we'll never have
I will take my lead from you I will jump in if you do
And I realize how fortunate I am
That I get to call you my friend

There's a river and it's called the Colorado
And it flows where no riverboat can go
But you know that you and me like the water we are free
So please let me lighten your load

And I’ll be home before nightfall and I’ll sleep in your bed
And I dream of all the things we'll never have
I will take my lead from you I will jump in if you do
And I realize how fortunate I am
That I get to call you my friend
