Green grow the laurels

from Laurels by Sophie Janna

/
  • Album with handwritten and hand-stamped sleeve
Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Since the first edition of this album has almost sold out, I made a new set. The old sleeve was no longer available and I changed my last name since the previous version, so this is a revised edition. The front is hand-stamped with a lino-cut made by Anneke ter Schure, everything else is handwritten onto the sleeve by me. That means that on these sleeves you can actually read the title of each song! :)

Includes unlimited streaming of Laurels via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

about

I cannot remember where I first heard this song, but I am sure it was a Sandy Denny recording that was so good that I never dared to sing it myself – until I spoke with Luka Bloom at the back room session in Mulligans who said to me that was not a very good reason and besides, Sandy Denny was dead. Of course it is hard for traditional songs to be preserved if living people don’t sing them. There are versions of this song in Scotland, England, Ireland and the United States and I've heard many different ones (and many more verses, too), but this is my favourite.

lyrics

Green grow the laurels and soft is the dew
Sad I was darling on parting from you
Perhaps in the future our love will renew
We'll love one another and promise to be true

I passed my love's window both night time and day
I passed my love's window both night time and day
And the looks that he gave me a thousand would slay
And the looks that he gave me a thousand would slay

I wrote my love a letter and he wrote me mine
I wrote my love a letter and he wrote me mine
Saying keep your love letter and I will keep mine
And you write to your love and I'll write to mine

Green grow the laurels and soft is the dew
Sad I was darling on parting from you
Perhaps in the future our love will renew
We'll love one another and promise to be true
